UBHC offers Speech Therapy specialized for Parkinson’s Disease
In India, about 0.58 million people have Parkinson’s Disease. 9 out of 10 people with Parkinson’s Disease may have difficulties with their speech. People with Parkinson’s Disease may also have swallowing problems which can cause aspiration pneumonia (swelling or infection of lungs). Aspiration pneumonia is a common cause of death in people with Parkinson’s disease.
To support people with Parkinson’s disease, UBHC is now offering a specialized therapy program called SPEAK OUT!
SPEAK OUT! is a therapy program for people with Parkinson’s Disease that helps to preserve their voice. This program was developed by Parkinson Voice Project, a non-profit organization in the USA. (https://www.parkinsonvoiceproject.org/)
In this program, people with Parkinson’s Disease are taught how to speak with ‘intent’ which means to speak loudly, clearly and with a purpose.

Following this individualized program, it is necessary to continue practicing the skills to slow the progression of the disease-related speech and swallowing problems. For this, we offer Parkinson Voice Project’s LOUD Crowd program.
The LOUD Crowd is a group therapy program where people who have completed the SPEAK OUT! program, meet as a group to practice the techniques and to maintain the improvements seen in their individual sessions and get together with others. This is supplemented with a Parkinson’s support group program by Unified Brain Health Care along with Arunai Neuro Centre.
Unified Brain Health Care is the only Indian grant recipient in 2021 chosen to receive training and support to provide this specialized training program to people with Parkinson’s Disease in our community.

Information session for friends and family explaining Parkinson’s Disease and the SPEAK OUT! Program
Follow-up and refresher sessions to check on progress after completion
Access to daily online home practice, to keep the practice going
This program has also been customized to be provided through the online mode. You can access the program from the comfort and safety of your own home through UBHC@Home. This therapy is offered in Tamil, Hindi and English.
